150: The One Thing: Practicing Humanity with Monica Lupo M.A., CCC-SLP, TSSLD, CDP, LSVT-C
Remember that we’re all humans before we’re therapists. This is not only our cue to listen and counsel as appropriate, but our reminder to ask the patient how they’re doing before asking them orientation questions. This extends into every area of our care.
Key Takeaway:
Our jobs don’t stop at the end of our workbooks.
I own a corporation called Speak Your Legacy Inc. and I wear a lot of hats. I’m hourly in my positions so that I can cover each of the areas in our field that I love. I am part of the corporate team for Center Management Group (SNF) providing SLP consultation and auditing. I am the Speech Department Supervisor at Brookside Multicare Nursing Center (adults and pediatrics where I maintain my TSSLD) and for Kindness Unlimited Therapy Services where I oversee licensed SLPs, clinical fellows (CFs), and students in both. I am an adjunct professor who has taught Adult Neurogenic Disorders, Diagnostics through the Lifespan and Dysphagia for CUNY Lehman College. I have advanced training in FEES and am a mobile FEES provider and mentor through my corporation. I help instruct the clinical portions of some of the FEES courses in NY. I am a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP), NYS Early Intervention certified, LSVT LOUD certified, and also trained in EMST 150& 75 (expiratory muscle strength training), OMNIFlow (breathing therapy feedback system), Restore Academy (virtual therapy gaming), and PENS (electric-stim). I do corporate consulting and hold licenses in NY, NC, and TX. I am Secretary Executive Board Member for a non-profit, Sensory Island. I am part of ASHA SIG 13:Dysphagia and was nominated Long Island’s Best SLP 2022 (NY). I received the ASHA ACE award, was selected as a national mentor for ASHA’s Leadership Mentoring Program for the last two years, and was awarded ASHA’s Distinguished Early Career Professional award.
