137: Outpatient Swallow Diagnostics: Get the Whole Picture
Isabel discusses our role and responsibilities when conducting outpatient video swallow studies (may apply to FEES as well), how to obtain all relevant information needed for a comprehensive assessment, and factors to consider when making recommendations.

Case History/Patient Interview
obtaining history, using open ended questions
use of self report measures (i.e. EAT-10, Reflux Symptom Index).
Cranial nerve exam, OME, symmetry, etc.
Advocating for esophageal screen/sweep.
Critical Thinking - Putting all pieces together and considering possible etiology of the patient’s chief complaint,
if swallow study does not reveal presence of dysphagia--> considering effect of medications on swallow physiology, patient QOL; how other bodily systems may affect a pt’s ability to swallow, etc.
Documentation: Accurate reports and thorough recommendations.

Born and raised in Colombia, immigrated here with my family in 2000.
Medical Speech Pathologist with 15 years of experience in the medical field. I have worked in a variety of settings, with most of my experience being in acute care. My area of interest and what I am passionate about is swallowing and swallowing disorders;I am actively pursuing board certification. Specific areas of interest include: assessment and rehabilitation of critical patients, head and neck cancer, multidisciplinary management of dysphagia, and patient advocacy.
I am the founder of the ACDF International Journal Club (meets on IG 1x/month), and have recently participated in several educational events to improve clinical practice and education for SLPs in South America.
I also recently started a mobile FEES company, driven by a passion to improve dysphagia management, and make instrumentals more accessible in my community.
