I am delighted to have Dr. Jordan Hazelwood as my guest on the COVID Conversations series. In response to the significant impact this public health crisis is having on our work, our lives, our education system, and our healthcare system, I’ve teamed up with my fellow SLPs to share insights into how the pandemic has changed their practice and what they’re doing to adapt. Today’s episode highlights the impact of COVID-19 on our professors, universities, undergraduate students, and graduate students.

topics covered:

  • Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Jordan’s work as a professor - switching to online learning, supporting students, finishing the semester on schedule.

  • Changes to admissions - previously completing in-person interviews.

  • Students considering taking time off school.

  • Increases in communication between students and professors leading to improved mentorship.

  • Adapting availability hours to fit student’s needs who may be working with increased hours during this time.

  • Moving from practicums in schools, SNFs, hospitals, etc. to simulated learning experiences.

  • Adjusting expectations of student work while maintaining high expectations for quality of learning.
