Episode 76: Incorporating Mindfulness into SLP Practice with JoAnn Vela, MS, CCC-SLP, CBIS
This course will discuss how mindfulness approaches can be applied under the speech pathologist’s scope of practice. With an increasing focus on individualized, patient centered care, mindfulness approaches open the door for therapeutic alliances and allow a clinician and patient to work together in an efficient and effective manner. The goal of this course is to provide brief education regarding mindfulness, how it connects to speech therapy practice, and current techniques that can incorporate mindfulness into speech therapy practice. This course primarily discusses application of mindfulness in adult rehabilitation settings.

JoAnn is a Texas Speech Language Pathologist who has worked in a variety of clinical settings since graduating with her Masters from The University of Texas at Dallas in December of 2017. She started off her CFY in a skilled nursing facility and wrapped it up at Baylor Scott White’s Day Neuro rehabilitation program, a specialized outpatient day program for neurological recovery. She became a certified brain injury specialist during her CFY which supported her desire to provide a holistic approach in her speech therapy practice. After getting her C’s, she has worked as a PRN in outpatient, inpatient, and day program settings. She also has a passion for research in the areas of social communication, attention, memory, return to work / school rehabilitation, and autism. Currently, she lives in San Antonio, Texas and is practicing in a school-based setting further identifying ways mindfulness is applicable beyond adult neurological rehabilitation.
